Best Pistol Reflex Sights Buying Guide
Now we’ve run through all eight of our best reflex sights for pistols, we’d like to discuss what are the most important things to look out for when buying one…
Know Your Pricing
With the vast amount of red dots on the market, it is almost impossible to know at first glance what is a good price for one.
They can be bought extremely cheap these days, but be very wary as these are usually inferior quality Chinese versions that more than likely lack accuracy, strength, and durability.
We recommend, at the very least, to only consider sights over the 100 dollar mark. And, if you are really serious about your shooting, 300-400 dollars is a good price to aim at.
Dot Size
The dot size is a very important consideration depending on the style of shooting you regularly do. If you want a rapid targeting close range sight, then the bigger the dot, the better. A good example could be as big as 8 MOA.
However, if you want to achieve more accuracy, a smaller dot is a better choice as it will not obstruct your view of the target as much. A good example of this is between 2 and 4 MOA.
Battery Power
Essentially, there are two ways a reflex sight is illuminated. Either it uses an LED or tritium to give you the glow. Some sights even use a combination of the two so that they can utilize the advantages of each.
However, if you want a sight that will give you good illumination in all light conditions, LED comes up tops. It’s only the battery power aspect that lets it down. So it’s best to look for long-lasting battery-powered LED sights.
If you want tritium illumination, you won’t ever need to change batteries, but it might let you down in really bright light conditions.
Your Pistol
Obviously, one very important thing to note is whether your chosen sight will actually mount properly onto your pistol.
Ideally, if you haven’t bought your pistol already, you ought to be thinking about a Glock MOS or Springfield OSP. These are “optics ready” pistols that will easily mount all of the sights we’ve covered in this review.
Although, many of the sights we’ve covered do come with mounting hardware and should work with a variety of other guns.
So you may still be thinking…
Do I really need a Pistol Reflex Sight?
Ultimately, it’s all down to personal preference. But, these sights can really enhance your shooting abilities and give you much better accuracy in demanding scenarios.
They’ll give you a solid edge at focusing on a threat. Plus, you will probably achieve greater accuracy while moving and firing. Essentially, they’re great for locking on to close to mid-range targets, especially in low light conditions.
Why not get one…
Well, if you’re not prepared to go through the process of learning how to use one, you shouldn’t bother. Also, since these are electronic devices, they are considered more unreliable than your standard iron sights. So, you need to become proficient with your firearm with or without a Red Dot.
