Over a period of more than 50 years, Smiths Detection has developed a partnership with the military that has provided a clear insight into the requirements of armed forces and the application of smart science on the battlefield. The principal threat is in the field of CBRN and Smiths Detection is now a world leader in systems to detect potentially lethal chemical and biological warfare agents, with new developments in radiological screening equipment (CBRN Detection Equipment and Systems).
In a life-and-death situation, the ease of use and minimal incidence of false detection alarms is almost as important as the detection capabilities of a device. Smiths Detection products have achieved the highest level of confidence in battlefield and security situations.
Military Personal Protection – Lightweight Chemical Detector
The development of advanced integrated sensing technologies has focussed on miniaturisation and resulted in the Lightweight Chemical Detector (LCD). Already selected by the UK Ministry of Defence, the US DoD and several other countries, the LCD represents a new generation of sophisticated lightweight chemical warfare agent detectors, which will revolutionise military personal protection in the 21st century.
The detector samples the air for chemical warfare agents, TICs and simulants. It is principally used as a low-profile personal detector worn on a soldier’s load bearing equipment but is also a capable survey instrument for checking cargo, equipment, personnel or facilities.
Chemical Agent Detectors
The latest development from SMiths Detection is the LCD-NEXUS, a portable, compact and rugged chemical warfare agent (CWA) and toxic industrial chemical (TIC) gas and vapour detector. Suitable for fixed or moving platforms, the LCD-NEXUS provides highly sensitive and selective detection, capable of measuring chemical concentrations down to miosis levels with accurate discrimination.
The LCD-NEXUS simultaneously samples for traces of CWAs and TICs, to provide real-time warning for threats at or below immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) levels. It also provides chemical details including class, type, concentration and dosage as well as CWA identification.
Smiths Detection also offers the GID-3. It provides collective protection alarms for dismounted troops, vehicles, small ships and command bunkers, to indicate the presence of chemical warfare agents and the level of danger.
Easy to use, rugged, reliable, battle proven and dependable, it is the world’s most comprehensively tested and widely deployed detector in current production. In the USA, GID-3 is known primarily as the M22 ACADA, having been selected after exhaustive competitive trials. Since 1998 over 41,600 units have been delivered to the Joint Services. GID-3 has also been accepted widely into service throughout NATO and countries spanning all regions of the world.
Biological Agent Detection
Systems for detecting and rapidly identifying biological warfare agents range from complete mobile systems, now in use with the UK MoD, to the hand held detector Bio-Seeq Plus, for homeland defence and military applications. These systems combine accuracy of detection with fast results, providing all the necessary information for those defending against the threat and implementing the necessary treatment and countermeasures.
Integrated Military Systems
Systems integration is the key to a sustainable future. Smiths Detection has developed relationships with industry and becoming the partner of choice in major programmes to create fully integrated systems. Smiths Detection acts as prime contractor or integrates sensors into other systems, managing though-life capability and delivering network-enabled integrated solutions. In the military arena we have delivered deployable and dismountable systems. The US DoD turned to Smiths Detection for vehicle based meteorological systems and its next generation chem/bio shelter system. The most sensitive biological detection and identification equipment, integrated as total vehicle systems, are being deployed by governments in the UK and Japan.
Base Protection and Safeguarding Military Installations
Smiths Detection not only protects troops on the battlefield and at sea, but also safeguards potentially vulnerable military installations, protecting bases or checkpoints from threats posed by weapons or explosives. Using trace detection and x-ray technologies, all visitors can be screened before they set foot in sensitive areas.
