Kontron Ruggedization

Systems, platforms and boards used in military applications have to operate at ambient temperatures that can range from –40°C to +85°C. Products must also withstand extreme shock and vibration, humidity and other challenging environmental factors.

To meet such a range of environmental constraints, Kontron’s products are available in several ruggedization classes from commercial, with or without conformal coating, to rugged air or rugged conduction- cooled versions.

Kontron has set a process of ruggedization that begins at the early stages of the design with the component selection, layout of the board and the signal integrity control. To facilitate the integration of COTS boards into systems, Kontron refers to the ANSI/VITA 47 recommendation.

Life Cycle and Obsolescence Management

Kontron products take into consideration the lifecycle constraints of military programs which span beyond the availability of consumer electronics. Kontron‘s long term supply and repair policy begins at the design stage through the selection of components from embedded products catalogues.

Components obsolescence monitoring is performed during all the General Availability (GA) of the product. Before moving the product into Restricted Availability, the customers are informed about the wide range of services which are proposed to protect their investments.

Kontron COTS Products

VME

VME is the most widely deployed standard in Defense/Aerospace. Its reliability and ruggedness has been deployed in the field for more than 25 years. VME’s reliability makes it ideal for missile control systems and naval applications. 

VPX

VPX is the latest VITA backplane standard supporting high speed switched fabric & mesh networking interconnects, higher density I/O and more power. Kontron VPX products are offered across all the VITA 47 build grades from air- to rugged conduction cooled.

CPCI

CompactPCI supports high bandwidth and provides tons of rear I/O and the latest software offerings. Available in rugged designs and extended temperature, CompactPCI’s versatility makes it ideal for performance demanding applications.

MicroTCA / AMC / ATCA

High computing power, high communication bandwidth and high availability are all factors driving military applications towards the use of MicroTCA / AMC / ATCA.

And with rugged implementations on the way for MicroTCA from the PICMG standards body, MicroTCA and ATCA have quickly moved to the forefront as the leading choice for military communication application

Platforms

Kontron has a complete line of CompactPCI, VME and VPX platforms, along with a diverse line of plug-in boards for industrial I/O, communications and graphics. 

PCI/104-Express

With a small and compact design, Kontron PCI/104-Express boards offer Intel® Core™2 Duo processing power. Ideal for space constrained environments, these boards include all of the standard PC interfaces plus Ethernet LAN, optional DVI and LVDS (dual screen) and a sound controller. Several expansion cards are also available with up to eight serial interfaces.

Computer-on-Modules

Using Computer-on-Modules such as ETX® or COM Express™ allows customers to focus on the development of their application-specific solution while Kontron handles the computing core. Standardized modules are simply plugged into the solution’s custom carrier board. COMs for high shock and vibration tolerance in harsh environments also are available.

IP67 Protected Computer with MIL Connectors

Kontron offers IP67 protected rugged PCs that can run up to the Intel® Atom™ Z510 1.1 GHz processor and feature mass store through built-in fl ash disks (SATA 40 GB or opt. Compact Flash).

Functional expansion through an internal PCI/104-Express card (signals use a 48 pin MIL connector) + optional GPS, GSM & WLAN with waterproof N-type antenna connectors are also available.

Rack Mount Servers and Box PCs
