InterAction of Bath Ltd Human Factors Integration (HFI) and Workstation Design

InterAction of Bath is an established consultancy specialising in Human Performance Engineering – the application of psychological, physiological and engineering principles to optimise the efficiency and safety of human tasks. We are certified to ISO9001:2000 and registered with the Ergonomics Society.

Based on our extensive military experience, we offer high quality services (and bespoke training courses) in the following areas:

  • Analysis in all areas of Human Factors
  • Production of Human Factors Integration Plans
  • Safety Case Development, including the design and population of hazard logs, and the quantification of human error rates
  • Manual Handling Risk Analysis, based on HSE and NIOSH criteria
  • Design and assessment of operable Workstations and workspaces for military use Assessment of Display Screen Equipment ergonomics

We have also created many software tools, such as InterWorkfor efficient hierarchical task analysis, operability data storage and process modelling.

Our clients include BAE Systems, Saab Bofors Dynamics, Thales Communications, Vickers Defence Systems, EDS Defence, BMT Defence Services, VT Group and Weir Strachan & Henshaw.

Human Factors Integration (HFI)

The MoD developed the Human Factors Integration process in recognising that incorporating Human Factors analysis into the design cycle improves the operability of the deliverable, whether it is an item of equipment or an entire warship.

Operability (also known as usability) is now recognised as vital, and our consultants apply a variety of Usability Engineering techniques to ensure that the equipment or system can be used easily.

Safety Case Development

Safety is vital to mission effectiveness and we offer services in Safety Case Development, gained from numerous safety projects in the defence sector. We can use the MoD’s Cassandra tool or our own InterRisk as required.

As the reliability of hardware and software has risen steadily, attention has turned to the role of human reliability in assuring safety. We offer unique experience of Human Reliability Assessment in the defence domain. Indeed, InterAction of Bath recently worked closely with the Sea Systems Group at Defence Equipment and Support in developing Quasi-Probabilistic Human Reliability Assessment – an analytic methodology for quantifying human error rates in the operations of naval vessels.

Manual Handling Assesment Risks

Assessing the risks of manual handling operations is an essential part of any safety management system. To accelerate what can be a slow and mundane process, we have created a number of software tools, embodying the manual handling criteria published by the HSE and NIOSH.

InterAction of Bath also provides comprehensive one- and three-day Human Factors and Manual Handling Training Courses for the defence and civil sectors.

Workstation Design and Development

InterAction of Bath can develop and assess Workstation Designs according to Human Factors criteria, so as to ensure workstation operability at the end of the development programme. Another of our software tools (InterPosture) simplifies the assessment of the musculoskeletal risks from the postures adopted.

If the workstation includes a computer screen, InterAction of Bath can quickly assess its compliance with the Display Screen Equipment Regulations.
