Since 1896 Brugg Cables has developed and manufactured cable and installation accessories for the transfer of data and supply of electricity. lt offers a matching line of accessories for the entire range of cables, which makes it a competent partner for complete system solutions. They employ more than 500 people and have an annual turnover of approximately 320m Swiss Francs.
The Security and Defense Unit is dedicated to providing mobile, reliable and rugged information systems suited to the military environment, and is constantly looking for innovative ways to meet the custom requirements of the armed forces, focusing on efficiency, durability and ease of handling.
Tactical Fiber Optic Cable Sets
Mobility, dependability and robustness are crucial factors for tactical fiber optic cable sets (TFOCA) to possess in extreme military environments and demanding conditions. With this in mind, Brugg Kabel has developed a range of versatile and durable cables:
- BRUmil is designed for extreme field operations, and is the only completely rodent-proof cable
- BRUtough, for field use, has a PUR jacket for maximum flexibility
- BRUpowermil, specifically for rough environments, is a hybrid cable, transferring both data and electric energy.
Available on various reels, and completed with rugged militarized connectors, these cables are practically indestructible, combining maximum performance levels with minimum lifecycle costs. Of course, the effectiveness and dependability of any communication link relies on its correct installation; therefore Brugg Kabel provide their customers with the required training and accessories, custom designed for military purposes.

Customized MIL Hardened Design
Brugg Kabel also develop subsystems for various applications, mainly in connection with their tactical fiber optic cable systems. They apply ruggedized designs to commercial off-the-shelf COTS products and industrial components, making them suited to use by the armed forces. The power inputs are protected against nuclear emissions and the communication inputs are protected against over-voltages depending on the individual customer's requirements, as dictated by their environment. Similarly, devices can be manufactured to IEC standard 60529, protecting them against splashes and dust, depending on individual needs. In all their customized MIL hardened design solutions they take into consideration the ease of transportation by limiting the maximum weight per unit, enabling soldiers to carry them around. These ruggedized designs withstand the rigors of the most hostile and demanding military environments.
Ruggedized Ethernet Distributor
This small mobile rugged ethernet distributor is designed to provide Ethernet and power to mobile users, for example laptop users. The so-called table distributor contains a switch which converts the Giga fiber input to electrical Ethernet outputs of 100 Base T and at the same time provides power to connected equipment, such as laptops. The power is fed through a hybrid copper and fiber optical cable, making the deployment quick and easy.

Hardened Media Converter
Brugg manufacture a hardened media converter which converts fiber 1000Base-LX to copper 10/100/1000 Base TX, powered either with DC 12-45 V or AC 230 V. Ethernet inputs are protected against over voltages and are in closed conditions according to IP 64 standards. Its application in the field is the extension of a LAN network to a remote location over tactical fiber optic cables by using two units. One special unit can be used as a repeater to extend the tactical cable range.
Surge and Lightning Protection
Brugg also offer surge and lightning protection solutions to prevent any harm coming to either people or equipment under canvas as the result of a lightning strike. The erection of masts discharges lightning into the ground by way of earth spikes.
The magnetic field caused by a lightning strike means that metallic cables can conduct dangerously high voltages, putting personnel at risk. Therefore, it is necessary to route all cables into the canvassed zone via the appropriate lightning arresters. The central feed point (CFP) serves the purpose of coarse protection and the distributed lightning protection filters in the equipment serve as fine protection.
