JRA Aerospace has provided management support to the defence and aerospace industries since it was formed in 1988. From its early beginnings as a provider of bid management support to the aerospace and defence sectors, the company has extended its range of clients to include many companies in the civil sector and developed a range of capabilities including:
- Safety Management
- Military Airworthiness Management
- Bid Management Support
- Aerospace Environmental Management
- Maritime and Aviation Systems Integration
The company operates with a highly experienced core team supported by a body of associates most of whom have worked with the company for many years. The company has been ISO 9001 certified since 1997 and is an MoD approved contractor under their FATS arrangement.
Military and Aerospace Safety Management
JRA supports practical safety assurance for equipment and systems (Product Safety), throughout the project lifecycle. We cover projects ranging from: new system developments using novel technology and critical software, to COTS / Legacy systems; from individual equipments to broad ‘Systems of Systems’.
Our support in the military and civil arenas has addressed the all aspects of project safety including safety assessments for simulators, safety cases for automated warehousing systems, hazard identification methods and hazard logs for Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems.
We also provide pragmatic support to organisations in their assurance of Corporate Safety, building on existing policy and processes, in order to develop an appropriate Safety Management System. This support provides business improvements as well as satisfying formal safety requirements such as: Health & Safety legislation and OHSAS 18001, CAP 712 and Defence Standard 00-56.
Military Airworthiness Management
JRA has provided airworthiness management support to the MoD for the last 10 years. JRA has undertaken audits of the Military Aircraft Release airworthiness documentation for a large proportion of the military fleet and has developed a customised database for the ongoing management of airworthiness for use by many of the aircraft authorities.
JRA has also undertaken Ageing Aircraft Audits on several aircraft types and has advised the MoD on the airworthiness issues surrounding the clearance of military UAVs. More recently, JRA has provided support for aircraft authorities transferring to the new regulatory framework for airworthiness management including the establishment of Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations in accordance with Def Stan 05-130, Mil Part M.
Bid Management Support for Military Equipment and Communication Systems Suppliers
JRA has been providing bid management and proposal support since its inception in 1988. JRA support covers the whole bidding cycle from decision to bid; bid strategy development; proposal preparation and editing and Red Team Review.
Typical proposals include multi-company bids to the MOD for aircraft, equipment and services. Based on experience gained over a wide variety of bids, the company has developed a comprehensive set of procedures and checklists which are used to optimise the bid solutions and the management of the proposal preparation process and has an impressive record of facilitating successful bids.. This experience has been distilled into customised, in house bid training sessions that have been delivered to a range of clients in both civil and defence markets.
Aerospace Environmental Management
JRA tailors its support to clients by developing both project Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and client specific individual equipment Environment Cases. Solutions are produced in accordance with ISO 14001 or the MoD Project-Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS), depending on the specific needs of clients. We review pertinent environmental legislation and identify individual stakeholder responsibilities prior to analysing environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts during a project lifecycle. Such work includes classification and prioritisation of impacts leading to an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and associated plans.
We develop Environmental Management Plans to align environmental and safety procedures to produce a user-friendly integrated Safety and Environmental Management System. JRA can deliver independent assessment of Environmental Management Systems and on-going support to clients e.g. through training or internal auditing. Where required we can offer a phased approach to meet customer requirements, ranging from an adopted approach offered by ISO14001 and POEMS to more informal EMS development. JRA can also deliver on elemental parts of EMS development including Environmental Policy Requirements.
Maritime and Aviation Systems Integration
The combination of a challenging environment with demanding military requirements makes successful ship/aircraft integration extremely difficult. Any weakness in this complex mix can diminish aircraft/ship synergy and lead to a loss of capability or worse.
JRA can offer a high level of expertise and experience to provide comprehensive support in this area. Support services include advice and design assistance on maritime/aviation interface requirements; support for the integration and sustainability of aircraft operating in the maritime environment and feasibility studies and independent advice on all aspects of maritime aviation.
In support of this work, JRA has developed specific tools such as the design Guide for the Delivery of Maritime Aviation Capability and methodologies for assembling Aviation Safety cases and for Categorising Helicopter Passenger Safety.
