A United States Air Force B1b Lancer strategic bomber has been involved in an incident in Qatar, but with no loss of life, the USAF has said in a statement.

The statement confirmed that the B1b was "involved in a ground incident and caught fire", and that this incident occurred at Qatar's Al-Udeid Air Base.

The same statement spoke of how it took place while the Lancer was taxiing after having landed at the base. "The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe", it said.

"The fire was contained."

Initial reports indicated that the B1b had been involved in a crash.

B1b Airstrikes over Afghanistan, Iraq

The Rockwell B1b remains at the epicentre of US airpower. The United States Air Force - the B1b's only operator - uses the type heavily for strategic airstrikes over Afghanistan and Iraq.

It is able to carry out intercontinental missions without the need to refuel, and normally, carries a crew of four.

B1b Supersonic Synthetic Fuel Flight

Last month, a B1b took part in an unprecedented supersonic flight, as it was the first time this had occurred in an aircraft powered by synthetic fuel.

B1b Ground Collision in Guam

Earlier in March, another B1b was involved in a collision with emergency vehicles on the ground at Guam's Andersen Air Force.

Al-Udeid itself possesses the longest runway in the Middle East, and hosts the USAF's 379th Air Expeditionary Wing.
