The head of the United Nations’ IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has stated that Iran would require up to eight years to develop a nuclear weapon. Consequently, Mohamed El Baradei warned against charging into conflict to suppress Tehran’s nuclear programme. He, instead, urged for a focus to be placed on forging diplomatic relations, engaging in dialogue and imposing sanctions in order to achieve resolution.

Mr El Baradei’s comments appeared in an interview which was published on the 22nd October 2007.

A day earlier, Dick Cheney, the US Vice President, had asserted that the world would not sit idly while Iran forged ahead with nuclear development. An attack has not been ruled out by Washington. Iran maintains, meanwhile, that its nuclear production is intended for non-military purposes.

Speaking to Le Monde, Mr El Baradei said: "I cannot judge their intentions, but supposing that Iran does intend to acquire a nuclear bomb, it would need between another three and eight years to succeed”, adding: "All the intelligence services agree on that."

He continued: "I want to get people away from the idea that Iran will be a threat from tomorrow, and that we are faced right now with the issue of whether Iran should be bombed or allowed to have the bomb”.

"We are not at all in that situation. Iraq is a glaring example of how, in many cases, the use of force exacerbates the problem rather than solving it."

Iran’s response to Mr El Baradei’s comments is not yet known.

Countries in the Western World are seeking to impose additional sanctions on Iran for continuing with its enrichment of uranium. The most prominent powers have, however, agreed to put off these sanctions until next month, to give Iran a chance to respond to the IAEA’s nuclear-themed questions. According to Mr El Baradei, a further month’s delay would be acceptable.

Armed Forces International will continue to provide unrivalled coverage of the very latest information to emerge regarding Iran’s nuclear programme as we get the facts.
