Curfew Imposed on US Military’s Okinawa-based Troops

The US military has placed a curfew on the soldiers it has stationed on the Japanese island of Okinawa. The move coincides with tensions over a number of recent events in which members of the US armed forces have been involved. One of these, it is claimed, was the rape of a Japanese girl.
US Military: Troops to Reflect during Curfew
The curfew started on the 20th February and, according to a military statement, it is hoped that the limitations imposed will provide troops with the opportunity to reflect on things.
"Active duty service members on Okinawa will be limited to their place of duty or employment, worship, education, or medical or dental treatment", the statement said.
It added that the limitations would allow troops "an opportunity to further review procedures and orders that govern the discipline and conduct of all US service members serving in Okinawa."
20,000 US Troops Based at Okinawa
The US military has a substantial presence on Okinawa – around 20,000 troops, overall. In the eyes of many residents, such a presence is unwelcome, and the alleged rape, of which more below, has sparked fury.
Twelve years ago, large-scale demonstrations ensued after a rape incident involving US troops and a girl of 12. Analysts say that, in light of recent happenings, officials from both Japan and the US are trying to stop another such protest from taking place.
The curfew is, for the moment, permanent, and was ordered by Lieutenant General Richard Zilmer – the US military’s chief Commander in the area.
US Marine Denies Girl Rape Claim
Several days ago, the arrest was made of US Marine Staff Sergeant Tyrone Hadnott. It was claimed that he had raped a girl, aged 14.
He denies the allegation, but has admitted to using force whilst kissing her.
Around the same time, two further members of the US military were taken in on charges of trespassing and drink driving.
Combined, these events caused Nobutaka Machimura, spokesman for the Japanese government, to comment on the level of discipline shown by the US armed forces.
"I only have one thing to express and that is our true anger”, he said, adding: “We demand serious self-reflection."
