Bush: Iran Remains a Global Threat
Posted by Paul Fiddian on 04/12/2007 - 22:23:50
According to the US President, George W. Bush, Iran continues to present a global threat. This is in spite of a new report which - as highlighted in a recent Armed Forces International News Item - suggested that Iran may not be involved in the construction of nuclear weapons. The President has referred to this report as a "warning signal", and asserted that his stance on the danger posed by a nuclear-armed Iran "hasn't changed."
Bush: Iran Could Re-Commence Nuclear Weapon Production
Mr Bush asserted that Iran was carrying on with its attempts to enrich uranium, and could re-commence the production of nuclear weapons.
The long-standing message from Tehran - the capital of Iran - is that the uranium is intended for civilian use.
The President said that the National Intelligence Estimate - the key report issued on the 3rd December - represented "an opportunity for us to rally the international community" to exert pressure on Iran to halt such uranium enrichment.
"I view this report as a warning signal that they had the program, they halted the program," Mr Bush advised the media. "The reason why it's a warning signal is they could restart it."
"Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous and Iran will be dangerous if they have the know-how to make a nuclear weapon", he added.
Iran Nuclear Report Asserted Weapon Production Ended 2003
The report stated, with "high confidence", its belief that Iran had ended its programme of nuclear development four years ago, in contrast to previous views on the issue.
Experts now say that, as a result, advocates of an attack on Iran will have a harder time justifying their cause.
Quizzed on the possibility of military action, President Bush stated: "The best diplomacy - effective diplomacy - is one in which all options are on the table."
