A truly hi-tech radar system is to be constructed on the Isle of Wight, it emerged on Monday August 4th. The radar's capability is such that it will be capable of detecting an object comparable in size to a golf ball with a separation of over 20 kilometres between the two.
The contract for the site's construction has been won by BAE Systems Insyte, according to the MoD.
Named 'Artisan', the radar system is also set to be added to a number of vessels operated by the Royal Navy, as well as feature in the construction of the two Future Navy Carriers, due to come into service in 2014 (HMS Queen Elizabeth) and 2016 (HMS Prince of Wales).
A spokesman for MoD Defence Equipment and Support, Rear Admiral Amjad Hussain, described ArtisanĀ as "a sophisticated world-class system which will significantly improve the flow and quality of information to commanders compared with existing technology."
He continued: "It will allow our ships to detect, track and aid the identification of a range of threats from the air and surface in difficult conditions.
"The new radar will replace existing systems on our Type 23 frigates, landing ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark and the assault helicopter carrier HMS Ocean - as well as on our two new aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.
"This is a prime example of the type of hi-tech equipment that we are investing in to improve the ability of our commanders to operate in the 21st Century."
News of the radar construction follows the recent announcement of the signing of a deal for HMS Queen Elizabeth's and HMS Prince of Wales' builds.
Each of these carriers will weigh 65,000 tonnes and, on-deck, will have a compliment of Royal Navy F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters/ JSFs, as well as Merlin helicopters and other types.
