The Ministry of Defence confirmed on July 30th that another member of the British armed forces had been killed while deployed in Afghanistan.
The soldier – who served with 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment – was involved in a patrol mission in the province of Helmand when he and his fellow troopers came across enemy forces.
The blast of a subsequent explosion led to the soldier being transported to a medical facility, but he died before reaching his destination.
Taking into account this soldier’s death, 114 British military personnel have now been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
"Everyone in Task Force Helmand is affected by the death of a soldier, and the thoughts and sympathies of us all are with the family at this most difficult time", Lieutenant Colonel David Richards – a spokesman for the British Army – said.
Relatives of the dead soldier have been notified of his death, and consequently asked that 24 hours elapse before additional information on him is issued.
The majority of the 114 military deaths suffered among British forces have occurred in Helmand since 2006.
On July 28th, news emerged of the death of Sergeant Jonathan Matthews, who died after receiving a gunshot wound.
Helmand remains a militant bastion, preserving the legacy of the Taliban control that was in place from 1996 to 2001.
The province is also Afghanistan’s principal area for the production of opium – finances from the sale of which are, according to some sources, being used to support insurgent activity.
