The MoD confirmed on July 28th that another British soldier had died in Afghanistan - taking the total number to 113 over the past seven years.
The soldier's death occurred following receipt of a gunshot wound - received as he was participating in a joint Afghan/ British military foot patrol in Helmand Province.
The shot was fired at approximately 10 in the morning (in Afghanistan), close to Lashkar Gah - Helmand's provincial capital.
Relatives of the soldier - a member of The Royal Regiment of Scotland's 4th Battalion - have been informed.
"At 1006hrs local time, a joint Afghan National Army and UK Operational Mentoring Liaison Team were patrolling on foot in the Marjah area, west of Lashkar Gah, in Helmand province", a statement issued by the MoD on the soldier's death said.
It continued: "The patrol received reports from locals that the Taliban were in the area but before they could take up defensive positions they received incoming fire, and the soldier sustained a single gunshot wound."
The soldier was airlifted to the Camp Bastion-based Joint Force Medical Facility but died soon after, despite "best medical efforts" to save him.
"Our thoughts are with the family at this tragic time", Lieutenant Colonel David Reynolds stated, adding: "As a member of Task Force Helmand he was a colleague of all deployed here and he will be missed."
