A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, taking the overall British military fatality figure in the country to 111 since 2001.
Injuries - not believed to be life-threatening - were suffered by two other soldiers, the MoD said.
All three military personnel were serving with 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment. In the case of the soldier who was killed, he was a member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).
Relatives of the soldiers have been notified.
In a statement it issued concerning the three men, the MoD described how, during the course of a standard patrol mission, they came under attack.
"Whilst returning fire one soldier from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was injured by a mine", the statement said.
It continued: "While leaving the scene after suppressing the enemy, a vehicle [that] other soldiers were travelling in hit a suspected improvised explosive device.
"One soldier from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was injured and one soldier from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers sustained serious injuries.
"The soldier from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, despite the best medical efforts at the scene, died a few minutes later.
"All casualties were extracted to Bastion medical facilities where they received medical care. Their injuries are not life threatening.
"The soldiers' next-of-kin have been informed and have requested a 24-hour period of grace before further details are released."
Captain Mike Finney, speaking for ISAF (Nato's International Security Assistance Force), stated: "Our hearts and minds are with the family and loved ones of this fine soldier who died.
"This soldier died honourably, helping bring security to Afghanistan."
REME is a British Army division responsible for maintaining virtually every electrical/ mechanical resource used by soldiers.
