Increase in MoD Compensation for Injured Troops

The Royal British Legion called for better armed forces recognition and treatmentThe MoD is set to provide two times the level of compensation presently given to the most seriously injured British troops, it emerged on July 17th.

The top payout will be reset to £570,000, in addition to a guaranteed, regular payments scheme, while members of the British armed forces with less debilitating injuries will also feel the benefits of the changes.

In the words of protestors lobbying for improvements to the compensation amounts currently paid out, the changes are welcome.

It is anticipated that Des Browne, Defence Secretary, will detail the revised payments to Members of Parliament this afternoon.

The new measures form one component of a more general venture designed to guarantee that better provisions are given to British military personnel and their relatives in other areas, like accommodation and education.

Military Covenant

They follow the Royal British Legion’s recent call for members of the armed forces and their loves ones to be better recognised and better treated, both by the government and by the public at large.

The Legion highlighted how the Military Covenant was not being maintained.

Families of severely-wounded British military personnel have also urged for higher levels of compensation to be provided.

Before now, the upper payout limit stood at £285,000. It is anticipated that Mr Browne will announce a minimum of a two-times increase to this figure.

Taking the regular payments into account, the ultimate lifetime compensation figures for some individuals could exceed £1.5 million.

“Any increase in the compensation package is wonderful”, Help for Heroes chairman/ co-founder Bryn Parry commented.

He added: “As far as we are concerned these young men and women are heroes for serving their country. We believe that if they are injured, they deserve the very best."

A Royal British Legion spokesman, meanwhile, said that the group was awaiting full details concerning the new amounts but said, so far, the news was “very, very encouraging.”

MoD Armed Forces Survey

The announcements follow a recent survey of the armed forces, the results of which intimated that almost 50 per cent of service personnel would be prepared to resign.

Armed Forces International will provide further coverage of these landmark changes as more facts emerge.
