Fairford Air Tattoo Could Move Venue, say Organisers

The Brazilian Smoke Squadron team would have been among this year's starsThe organisers of the Royal International Air Tattoo have hinted at the possibility of relocating the event to a new venue in light of the downpours that, ultimately, led to its cancellation this year.

The Air Tattoo – among the globally dominant armed forces events - has been held since 1971 and, in that time, taken place at four different sites.

Air Tattoo Venues

Initially, the Air Tattoo was put on at North Weald, Essex, UK, which figured prominently as a fighter base during World War Two and especially in the Battle of Britain.

As the event grew, so a new site was needed. Consequently, it moved to RAF Greenham Common, but nuclear weapons requirements demanded that again, it shift operations.

Save for two years out due to runway repairs, RAF Fairford has been the Air Tattoo’s home since 1985, both physically and spiritually.

Air Tattoo Cancelled

As Armed Forces International reported, however, this year’s event was cancelled on both of the public days due to the ground conditions that persistent rain in the days leading up to it had created.

Speaking to the BBC, Air Tattoo Director Tim Prince said that, theoretically, a move could take place if it meant that the show could continue.

"We want to keep the international air tattoo going”, Mr Prince said.

“It's an international event and we are famous for it.”

"We want it to run no matter what so if we have to move we would do so, we wouldn't rule it out, but it would be a great shame because our hosts here and the Cotswolds people are outstanding in their support of us.

"So we'll do our damnedest."

Airshow Stars

Royal International Air Tattoo 2008’s total cancellation was an unprecedented move. It was anticipated that as many as 150,000 visitors would attend who, in all, would have been able to see over 200 aircraft on the ground and in the air.

Among the stars would have been the USAF F-22 Raptor, on its first trip to Europe and the Brazilian ‘Smoke Squadron’ aerobatic team, which would have given its first performance in this country.

Members of the public who purchased tickets for either Saturday 12th July or Sunday 13th of the event will be fully refunded, the organisers have said. The Air Tattoo website has details of how to obtain ticket refunds, while a Helpline is also available on 01285 713300.
