Iran's "Upgraded" Shahab-3 Missile Test Fired

The new Shahab-3 is said to have a range that makes it capable of striking IsraelIran has carried out a new missile test-launch, it emerged on July 9th. The missile – described as a variation on the Shahab-3 – has a range that, at 2,000 kilometres, would take it into Israel, according to the Iranian press.

Nine Missile Launches

The new missile was one of a series of nine launched from an unpopulated area out in the desert.

Military Action Over Nuclear Claims

While a previous trial of the Shahab-3 missile has taken place, this new launch coincided with heightened tensions over the prospect of either Israel or the US possibly reacting militarily to claims concerning Iran’s nuclear programme.

The US condemned the launch, urging Iran to cease its weapons ambitions in this way.

Iran, said Gordon Johndroe – a spokesman for the White House – should “refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world.”

According to the Iranian press, the goal of the trial-launch was to showcase the country’s "determination and power to the enemies who have used aggressive language during recent weeks."

"We are ready to defend the integrity of the Iranian nation," said Brigadier General Hoseyn Salami, who heads Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

In addition to the new, “upgraded” Shahab-3, two further missile types were also sent aloft during the same operation.

"Our missiles are ready for shooting at any place and any time, quickly and with accuracy", General Salami stated.

"The enemy must not repeat its mistakes. The enemy targets are under surveillance."

Israeli Military Exercise

According to some sources, the exercise was intended as a stark response to a military exercise that Israel carried out last month – an exercise perceived as a rehearsal for a future strike on Iran’s nuclear sites.

On July 7th, Iranian Supreme Leader aide, Ali Shirazi, stated: "The first US shot on Iran would set the United States' vital interests in the world on fire", adding: "Tel Aviv and the US fleet in the Persian Gulf would be the targets that would be set on fire."

“No War”: Ahmadinejad

Subsequently, however, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s President, was adamant that no plans existed to launch military action against Israel. Iran, he added, was not concerned by the prospect of Israel, or the US, attacking it over its nuclear programme.

"I assure you that there won't be any war in the future", he asserted.

US, Czech Shield Agreement

Yesterday, the US and the Czech Republic signed an agreement concerning the US Missile Defence Shield – a measure, according to the US, designed to thwart missiles launched by “rogue” states – Iran among them.
