An event involving ground-based and airborne British armed forces participation is to take place later on today in London, the aim of which is to raise money for injured military personnel.
City Salute – to be attended by Prince Harry and Prince William – will include a Royal Air Force flypast, as well as troop parades and a military band.
Both Princes are patrons of the City Salute Appeal.
The flypast will feature RAF Typhoon combat jets and Chinook helicopters, while among the units represented on the ground will be the Household Cavalry, the Irish Guards and the Ghurkhas.
The event will also feature a son et lumiere presentation, with St Paul’s Cathedral as the backdrop.
Those involved in City Salute’s organisation are hoping that members of the public watching tonight’s spectacle will give money, which will be used to part-fund the construction of new facilities at the military rehabilitation centre, Headley Court.
The City Salute Appeal aims to raise funds for armed forces charities the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, and Help for Heroes.
Headley Court itself was in the news yesterday when it was announced that it would be given an additional £24 million – funds that will be used towards the build of a larger prosthetic limb workshop, as well as other new features at the Surrey-based centre.
Headley Court cares for 180 patients – all members of the armed forces injured whilst on deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan.
In the City Salute event brochure, William and Harry write:"We are both currently enjoying the privilege of seeing at first hand the simply remarkable job which the men and women of our Armed Forces do.
"Their professionalism is coupled with quite extraordinary personal qualities of courage, resilience, modesty, and humour - qualities which they display in good times and in bad, and which are humbling and inspiring beyond measure.
"Our servicemen and women need to know that we as a people can display those same qualities - that we will support them in good times and in bad; and they need to know just how grateful we are for the job which they do on our behalf so uncomplainingly and so well."
City Salute begins at around 8.00PM tonight
