Prince William and Prince Harry have publically given their backing to an event designed to raise funds to help British military personnel with injuries. Both are patrons of the City Salute Appeal – a campaign launched in support of sports facilities where members of the armed forces who have been wounded can be treated.
Prince Harry has recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan, while Prince William is currently undergoing RAF flight training. Both of them today expressed their support for an event that will take place in London on May 7th.
This event will involve ground-based and airborne elements. Royal Air Force aircraft will fly past while, at ground level, troops will parade and military bands will play, with St. Paul’s Cathedral providing the backdrop to proceedings.
"As brothers, we are delighted to be supporting the City of London in saluting all those who serve their country", said Prince William.
He continued: "As well as raising money for vital rehabilitation facilities, City Salute is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the fantastic contribution made by our servicemen and women and their families.
"It is also a chance to pay tribute to the casualty evacuation and medical staff of all three Services who protect and care for the wounded so brilliantly and with such tireless dedication."
Funds gathered in the campaign will be provided to armed forces charities the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, and Help for Heroes.
Those involved in the pageant’s organisation also hope that its audience will make financial contributions to Headley Court military rehabilitation centre.
David Lewis, Lord Mayor of the City of London, said of the forthcoming event:
"The City of London is immensely proud of its historic and very close association with the armed forces, which dates back to when the City was founded.
"I am delighted that through City Salute we have an opportunity to celebrate these links, to salute the men and women of the armed forces, and to show our gratitude for the courage and forbearance displayed by them and by their families."
