Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) - Glossary Term

A high-intensity, short-duration burst of electromagnetic energy or radiation resulting from an explosion or an intensely fluctuating magnetic field. This causes damaging current and voltage surges when the resulting electric and magnetic fields interfere with electrical systems.

If the detonation is nuclear, the electromagnetic pulse consists of a continuous frequency spectrum, which produces an electromagnetic shockwave, spreading the effects of the explosion beyond the blast radius.
