The mission of the University of Portsmouth is to be a centre of excellence and innovation in education, research, quality of student experience and the preparation of students for their future. The University has five Faculties, The Environment, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Technology and a Business School. Together, they provide over 350 HE programmes at both first degree and postgraduate levels ranging from Art, Design & Creative Technology, through IT Systems and Engineering to Marine related subjects and all forms of Business & Financial Administration.

Many subjects can be studied on a part-time basis and an increasing number of programmes are provided on-line or by distance learning. Most courses have a strong vocational focus and there are a large number of mature students. The University is also at the forefront of work-based learning and can provide individually tailored programmes of blended learning, taking account of in-Service training, prior experience and current employment.

The University is familiar with students from the Armed Forces and the Defence industries, and accredits Service training and employment from Foundation Degrees to Masters Courses.
