Hydro Group plc is a total sub sea solution provider with 25 years as market leader. The Group is composed by two companies Hydro Bond Engineering Ltd and Hydrocable Ltd Systems. Hydro Group designs and manufactures underwater and harsh environment electrical and optical connectors, penetrators and cable assemblies to provide power and data into a wide range of applications. The Group operates on a global platform providing total solutions to a portfolio of Prime Contractors, major operators, OEM's, Defense agencies, Defence Organisations and the UK MOD.
Acoustic or magnetic signature ranges utilize a number of sensors which are positioned or anchored on the seabed.
Range cables retain power, instrumentation & fibre optic (firer optic) data conductors, connecting the sensor to a shore langing & finally to a control or operation station.
This type of range is usually permanent or fixed in one location with many cables buried or attached to concrete stantions.
Transportable ranges are deployed from surface boats and require to light in weight and flexible for ease of manhandling and rapid deployment.
Hydro Bond Cable Splice Kits, manufactured from an extremely tough and durable rubber, offer the customer an infield emergency cable splicing repair system.
Four standard moulds are available incorporating specially designed flexible cable grips, which accommodate a variety of cable sizes from 5mm to 32mm in diameter.
Hydro Bond have been moulding, splicing polyethelen cables for over 25 years, originally the technique was developed in conjunction with the MOD (Ministry of Defence) at foxhill as Polyethelene (PE) cables were used extensively on all UK submarines. Hydro Bond is a MOD qualified contractor for this type of moulding. Hydro Bond developed its own in house primers for bonding polyethylene to various types of metals - including titanium, monel, silicon bronze, stainless steel and aluminium.
The processes involved included surface preparation, deoxidation, etching, priming prior to the moulding operation.
Cathodic Protection Cable is a multi stranded tinned copper conductor insulated with high density polyethelene (HDPE) or cross linked polyethelene. These materials provide excellent abrasion, crush, chemical, oil and water resistance.
The cables can be further reinforced with galvanised steel wire braid (GSWB) or Kevlar to give further tensile strength for deep water applications. Cathodic protection cables are used in cathodic systems to protect against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion in underground or submerged metallic structures.
HL100 Encapsulation PolyurethaneThe HL100 Encapsulating Rubber which Hydro Bond use for moulding cable splices and overmoulding connector housings etc. is a polyetherurethane rubber. This particular material is heat cured with a diamine based compound to form a polyetherurethane rubber with outstanding physical properties.
HL 100 should not be confused with cold setting and hot setting polyester based urethanes since these materials have vastly inferior water resistant properties.
HPS Electrical PenetratorsHydro Bond electrical penetrators are designed for deep sea applications and are used for passing electrical energy through the pressure boundaries of underwater vehicles and equipment.
Several of the designs are Lloyds and DNV type approved and have been specifically designed to withstand both gas and hydrostatic pressure.
Pressure blocking within the penetrator is achieved by using a hard and tough non-conductive insert through which solid conductors are passed. Each individual insert is pre-tested to 5,000 psi before being wired and assembled into the penetrator housing. Peripheral sealing of the insert is effected by means of viton rubber 'O' seals.
