The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) co-ordinates the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Since its establishment in 1997, the OPCW has emerged as a new type of global, treaty based, international organisation with responsibilities for disarmament and non-proliferation, possessing the impartial mechanisms required for verifying compliance with the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention and redressing cases of non-compliance should they occur.
