Diehl BGT Defence GmbH & Co. KG has its headquarters in Germany and employs approximately one thousand, six hundred and thirty employees. Diehl BGT is a subsidiary of Diehl Defence.

Diehl BGT produces and develops large scale missile programs, covering such products as seeker guided missiles, ammunition and training systems.

IDAS Missile Systems

With the IDAS missile system, a submerged submarine can engage enemy anti-submarine warfarehelicopters, small surface vessels and land targets near the coast with highest precision. The IDAS system comprises the missile, four of which are housed in a special launch canister in the torpedo tube, and the control console in the submarine's command and control center. Main missile components are the imaging IR seeker taken over from IRIS-T, a fiber-optic data link between the control console and the missile as well as a single-stage, solid-propellant rocket motor providing IDAS with a mission range of approx. 20km.

The operator on board the submarine may intervene in the course of the mission at any time. In addition, reconnaissance results and target images obtained by means of the seeker can be evaluated in the submarine. With IDAS, a modern, conventional submarine is provided with completely new capabilities (escalation), also enabling its use in new scenarios of asymmetric warfare. IDAS is a technology demonstration program financed by BWB and the industrial working group ARGE IDAS (HDW and Diehl BGT Defence: 40% each, Kongsberg: 20%). IDAS is planned to enter the development phase in 2007.

EUROSPIKE Guided Missiles

The SPIKE weapon system develops its strengths in current and future mission scenarios, especially in connection with asymmetric threats and Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT). The EUROSPIKE guidedmissile family offers comprehensive engagement possibilities for both stationary and mobile targets, by day and night, within a range between 200 and 8,000mtr. The special system capabilities, "Non-Line Of Sight" (NLOS) and "Lock-On After Launch" (LOAL), enable engagement of identified targets even when under cover. The image taken by the seeker is transmitted via fiber-optical connection to the gunner and represented in the launcher's eyepiece. Thus, the gunner is able to correct the homing point over the entire flight time and to simultaneously minimize the risk of collateral damage. This ability of pinpoint hit accuracy can also be utilized in combatting bunkers by guiding missiles directly to weak points such as doors or vents. Due to the fiber-optical connection, the system cannot be interfered with electronically and the gunner's position is very difficult to locate.

IRIS-T Air To Air Guided Missile

The IRIS-T short-range, air-to-air guided missile is a joint development of Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain and Sweden. It has replaced the AIM-9L Sidewinder missile in the air forces of these countries since the end of 2005. The program is managed by Diehl BGT Defence as prime contractor. In December 2005, Austria was won as first export customer.

Compared with the predecessor generation, IRIS-T is characterized by significantly increased maneuverability, much greater acquisition range, higher hit accuracy and warhead effectiveness as well as considerably improved resistance to countermeasures. Even targets behind the launching aircraft can be engaged successfully by IRIS-T. The infrared seeker developed by Diehl BGT Defence provides extremely high resolution, target discrimination and flare suppression - even if confronted with the latest countermeasures.
Diameter, length, mass and center-of-gravity position have deliberately been chosen such that they meet the requirement for compatibility with its Sidewinder predecessor. The missile-launcher interface, too, has been designed so as to be compatible with both the previous analog Sidewinder interface and the digital interfaces of modern fighter aircraft. IRIS-T has already been integrated into the Eurofighter, F-16 and Tornado. Work for integration of the missile into the JAS 39 Gripen and F-18 aircraft is fully under way. Integration studies are conducted for further platforms such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

GMLRS Artillery Rockets

GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) is a guided artillery rocket, a further development based on the MLRS artillery rocket family. Due to its capability of autonomous guidance by four canard control surfaces and a rotating fin assembly, this roll-stabilized rocket can engage targets at a range of up to 75km with GPS accuracy, using its high-accuracy inertial sensor system with GPS assistance and a new rocket motor. Thus, this carrier system will be able in the future to carry further submunitions, which require highly precise delivery, in addition to the existing warheads. Through warhead developments with SMArt® submunitions in Germany and HE unitary in the US, the German Armed Forces will be in a position to meet modern tactical artillery requirements by 2010 at the latest. Furthermore, the high efficiency increase of this guided rocket enables use of wheeled and air-transportable rocket launchers with the new EFCS fire control system.
