Groundbreaking PFI/PPP Deal Between MoD and BT

The Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service connects over 240,000 users at over 1500 sites across the UK and overseas.

BT (DFTS) Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service

Since its inception in 1997, DCSA and BT working together to deliver DFTS have transformed the MoD's communications by replacing the 19 networks and 46 services, all operated separately by the individual Armed Forces, with one unified service.

DFTS now provides a comprehensive range of ICT solutions that enable the MoD to communicate flexibly, securely, reliably and seamlessly.

DFTS offers services that enable:

  • Flexible working utilising audio and video conferencing, and RESTRICTED LAN Interconnect Remote Access (RLI RA)
  • Secure communications through our Secure Speech and SECRET LAN Interconnect (SLI) services
  • Simple office communications with a security accredited voice service, fully managed RESTRICTED and SECRET data network, and a call reception and directory service.

As well as technical capability, DFTS also realises significant cost savings for the MoD. Costs are all-important and prices are benchmarked with similar telecommunications services in the commercial sector so that the MoD is assured value for money.
