Effective Simulated Training for Ground Controllers Firearms Training Systems is proud to announce the first commercially available Indirect Fire-Forward Air Control Trainer (I-FACT), designed to train ground controllers in the tactics, techniques and procedures for successful joint-close air support (JCAS) operations.

Simulation Training from Model Airplanes to Mission Rehearsals

I-FACT Advances Simulation Training from Model Airplanes to Mission Rehearsals

Preparation is the key to readiness. Your troops deserve to train on the most technologically and strategically advanced systems available. Technology can be a combat multiplier on any battlefield, against any enemy. Prior to I-FACT, forward air control training consisted of model airplanes and fabricated terrain boards. Engagement training had to utilize real aircraft and mission targets, making the training almost as expensive as the mission itself.

Thanks to the integration of I-FACT into their training courses, some organizations have cut the number of flight sorties in half by providing an economically and time-efficient solution that allows student controllers to qualify for graduation with four-to-six controls as opposed to eight-to-twelve.

A US military customer is experiencing significant reductions in the resources required, both material and human, to conduct ground controller training. In at least one example, the use of I-FACT allowed the size of a training class to increase from ten-to-seventeen students providing the invaluable benefit of putting more qualified ground controllers in the field.

First Perspective—Then Prerogative.

FATS I-FACT was designed from the ground controller’s perspective up to facilitate joint-capabilities training first and foremost. By taking this approach FATS leveraged the capabilities of the Indirect Fire Trainer (IFT) to provide unsurpassed ground observer training experience that allows students to experience artillery, mortar, naval gunfire, MLRS, and fire-support planning in an accurate and realistic environment.

The expanded, computer-controlled, fixed and rotary-wing CAS with the AC130 gunship and Bomber CAS, facilitate procedural training like no other system of its kind. FATS industry partner, SDS International, further expands the I-FACT capabilities by adding a simulated pilot station known as Lite FlightTM. This addition allows the pilot to fly simulated aircraft in support of the ground controller.

SDS Lite Flight simulates pilot-to-ground-controller interaction by accurately simulating various aircraft including F16, F18, A10, AH64, ApacheOH 58Ds and Armed UAVs. This technology lets the ground controller view what the pilot sees from any altitude. Controlling a fast moving attack aircraft in close proximity to friendly troops is an unruly challenge for anyone to undertake. The ability to show a student what the pilot is doing builds experience and allows the controller to appreciate the dynamics and challenges associated with delivering JCAS.

Get Ready for the Real Thing.

The natural progression of I-FACT is quickly developing into a mission rehearsal tool where pilots and ground controllers will train and rehearse JCAS missions in the virtual world, utilizing the terrain they will operate on during mission execution. FATS, SDS International, and government partners at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) are actively expanding the capabilities of the hardware and software that will make mission rehearsal a near-future possibility. Current technologies include Rapid Terrain Generation (RTG), integration with tactical communications equipment, and networking with aircraft flight simulators and between-command and control systems.

Experience Quality and Efficiency.

After 20 years in simulation training, FATS provides the experience, quality product, and service, and virtual training solutions for every aspect of military and law enforcement training. That means—better price, better product, better training, and better readiness to contribute to successful mission execution.
