Rotomoulded containers just might be the most low cost, efficient solution yet, for the protection, storage and operational deployment of military equipment.
What is rotomoulding
Just think of Easter eggs, manufactured by rotating molten chocolate inside a hollow mould – Rotomoulding uses exactly the same concept. The raw material is usually polyethylene granule or less usually polypropylenes, polycarbonates and nylons.
The process involves the placing of a pre-measured charge of the raw material inside a split mould. The mould is then rotated for a preset period of time around three axis, whilst travelling through a preheated oven, to evenly distribute the melting material around the inside of the mould. The mould is removed from the oven whilst continuing to rotate, and when cool, the moulded part is extracted from the mould for the process to begin again.
Mould design & different rotating patterns can achieve variations in wall thickness in complex shapes and moulds can also incorporate “inner shapes” to produce a twin skin mouldings. Various external surface finishes can be achieved by “dressing” the inside of the mould.
Why rotomoulded containers
Rotomoulded containers are light yet durable. Unlike other processes, rotomoulding does not stress the material during production, so it retains its strength and flexibility. It distributes 15 to 20% more polymer into the corners, giving improved absorption of impact and shock when the container is dropped. Polyethylene rotomoulded cases are resistant to solvents, oils and acids and can be readily de- contaminated by high pressure steam cleaning.
Corners can be rounded to prevent damage to other objects and injury to handlers. More importantly the precision of the process enables a parting line to be moulded-in, which, coupled with a silicon rubber seal enables an hermetic seal, enabling containers to be watertight and dustproof at very little extra cost.
CP Cases are specialists in the design of rotomoulded containers, with expertise in producing custom designed solutions for specific applications. They are also UK distributors for the Hardigg range of standard rotomoulded containers, the most extensive range of off-the shelf and made to order rotomoulded containers in the world.
Applications
Rotomoulded containers have been used all over the world in extreme climatic conditions, including active combat, for such varied uses as transit of hot food, missile storage, rifle cases, foot lockers, engineering spares, 19 inch electronics racking and ammunition storage.
