Mobile lightweight shelters for rapid deployment have been TAM AS’s main subject for almost 25 years.

Through the years, TAM AS have developed a wide range of military lightweight shelters, both expandable and non expandable shelters. All shelter types are produced in high quality, self-produced, glued sandwich panels to assure a trouble free product and low life cycle cost.

The lifetime is estimated to be more than 20 years. Most of our lightweight shelters are designed by TAM with a focus on rapid deployment from Artic conditions to extreme hot climates.

Most of TAM's lightweight shelters and expandable shelters are used by Peacekeeping Forces as command posts, communication centres, radar systems, power supply or similar.

Small Communication ShelterTAM's first serial produced military shelter came into the market in 1983 and today all shelters are fully operating, which grants for quality. Today a larger number of these small communication shelters are in operation in several places in the world.

MAMBA and ARTHUR

In the early ninety's TAM participated in a Swedish and Norwegian developing project managed by Ericsson. The goal was to make a new generation and the best mobile and flexible radar system in the world, where all participating companies used their best to meet the demands.

The result is known as ARTHUR - ARTillery HUnting Radar, also known as MAMBA - Mobile Artillery Monitoring Battlefield Radar. TAM's challenge was to make the lightweight hard-skin sandwich shelters to meet all kinds of environment and with all interfaces and screw holes inside and outside, entry panels, junction boxes, heating and ventilation, some furniture and a lot of other special requirements.

The TAM shelters, ARTHUR and MAMBA fulfilled all requirements They are long lasting lightweight shelters with extreme low Life Cycle Cost. The ARTHUR and MAMBA radar systems are in operation by several nations.

Expandable lightweight shelters for rapid deployment

ARTHUR / MAMBAIn early 1993 the 339 Skv. at Royal Norwegian Air Force needed better and more mobile lightweight Command Posts when operating in the fields. On this request TAM started the development on lightweight expandable shelters for raid deployment.

Two different types of expandable shelter concepts were developed and both shelter systems fulfilled the requirements. Common features for both system where that they all have ISO 20ft. container interfaces, can be transported by all kinds of vehicles, on rail and ship and due to the low weight, 2 expandable shelters can be carried in one C-130 Hercules air craft.

Besides this they all had integrated hook-lift systems (LHS) to meet NATO requirements or according to STANAG.

To obtain the request for rapid deployment TAM integrated hydraulic jack legs for levelling in all kind of terrain within minutes. Only two people are required. Special attention was also focused on quick erection of the mast and other needed equipment.

Later on, the expandable shelters are refined with a lot of options, but the basic and reliable concepts are maintained. Today TAM's expandable shelter systems are in use within the Army, Airforce, Navy, NODECA and other departments. These expandable lightweight shelter systems are always the first choice on new missions where each user has their own flexible configuration which also makes changes of equipment and upgrades easy and at low cost.

Later on TAM has made a mix of both shelter types, which has been a great success and new shelter type is in operation in several parts of the world.

ISO 10ft. Shelters

As a result of TAM's easy expandable concept, which is possible due to the advanced quality on the sandwich system, 10ft. ISO expandable shelters are also developed, which also are approved according to several clients' demands.

TAMEX - TAM EXpandable shelterTAMEX - TAM EXpandable shelter.

A third expandable shelter type TAMEX (TAM EXpandable) is also available - up to 3 times expandable, full standing height all over and flat floor including above mentioned features. The weight - about 3000 kg (three times expandable)

The TAMEX shelter has some special features such as flat floor when expanded. The shelter can have equipment fixed inside to both floor and roof in the big centre part or used almost like a transport container during transport. A lot of options are available.

All shelters can be equipped with silent diesel power generators if needed.

Communication shelter on the HUMMWV

Shelter on HUMMWVTAM has developed a vide range of communication shelters for different types vehicles. Among them are the well known HUMMWV shelter carrier.

On this shelter type 63000 we have also developed a new super silent diesel tunnel generator designed for extreme hot climate. As usual an all TAM shelters a lot of options are available.

Owner and General Manager

TAM AS was founded in 1981 by Tor A. Mentzoni who is the major owner and General Manager of the company.

Mr. Mentzoni was educated as a Naval Architect and he has worked within shipyard’s diffent departments, oil industry and as consultant to shipping companies.

In the early 1970th the development of safer closed life boats and freefall boats for quick evacuation from oil rigs and oil tankers started. This started the new technology, using composites and sandwich systems to obtain extreme high strength, lightweight and long lasting life saving equipment.

The high quality sandwich system and its flexibility captured Mentzoni’s mind. His vision was that a quality sandwich system, sooner or later could be used on shore due to the excellent features such as low weight, high strength, low weight and almost ever lasting.

Mentzoni founded TAM AS, which was the first company in Norway using vacuum gluing technique to produce high quality, lightweight and self supporting sandwich panels with metal skin inside and outside. The materials were refined into shelters, portable huts etc.

His vision was that the Peace Keeping Forces should be the Client no. 1.

Gradually TAM entered the mobile military shelter marked and from 1984 the lightweight military hard-skin shelters have been the main activity, which also includes design development and testing. TAM’s Expandable Shelters for Rapid Deployment are good samples of the company’s development and good lightweight products.

To day TAM Shelters are used in different parts of the world wide with good results.
