NEMP-Protected Container

Advanced developments in present times hold risks in the military field. Apart from already known influences in regards to EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) Armed Forces also recognise the threats by HPE (High - Power - Electromagnetics) to which HEMP (High - Altitude - Electromagnetic - Pulse) and HPM (High -Power - Microwave) belong.

These two types of threats are combined under the term IEMI (Intentional - Electro - Magnetic - Interference). RUAG's NEMP-Protected Container is the Solution thereto.

These days the HEMP threat is defined in various officially published standards but the parameters have been approximated. The current threat values are based on calculations and are dependent on the distance between the observation point and the projection of the detonation of the nuclear blasting composition on the earth’s surface. For the HPM threat the test object can be tested according to “threat class high” giving certain information regarding interference resistance.

RUAG's NEMP-Protected Container

RUAG Land Systems, Profit Centre Logistics Vehicles & Containers, has taken these challenging requirements as the basis for the following tasks: Development, construction and machining of a NEMP/EMP-protected container, using state-of-the-art technology.

The container must have sufficient shielding effectiveness, so that the fields created in the interior by IEMI are limited to values which are no longer a threat for the mounted devices.
Present considerations for the balance of the protection requirements lead to the conclusion that the HEMP-protection requirements, in regards to shielding effectiveness, are to be compiled and adapted from already known standards. The requirement is a shielding effectiveness of the electric and magnetic field of at least 60 dB within the frequency range of 15 kHz to 10 GHz.

The basic parameters of such a container are:

  • Means of transport: Truck, trailer, ship, train, plane. The displacement of the vehicle can take place on 4th class roads and partially on less fortified paths (MIL STD 810 E, Meth. 514, table 514.4-All). The construction principle as well as the materials necessary for the production is to be chosen so that the handling specific and driving dynamic forces occurring during handling and transport can be absorbed and transformed without damage. No parts may become loose by vibration.
  • Mechanical requirements such as shock, fall and vibration.
  • Climatic conditions

Solution:

RUAG Land Systems is developing a new family of NEMP-protected containers. These comprise:
RUAG Land Systems

  • Interchangeable container for trucks and trailers according to
    ISO 628
  • ISO-Container 20x8x8“ according to ISO 668 (optional 20x8x8,6“)
    oModel 1 : 1
oModel 1 : 2 (extendable on one side)

Based on a construction frame developed by RUAG Land Systems, with partitioning of the surface according to customer requirements, the relevant spaces are incorporated according to the Faraday requirements. Thanks to the newly developed door as well as the passage the required objectives are met. The sandwich-elements offer good protection against hot and cold environments, and by using the correctly chosen NEMP-protected air conditioning optimal interior conditions can be reached.

Customer and user specific interior designs can be chosen. I. e. radio or information technology or other material – the optimal solution can be offered.

RUAG Land Systems has a further product in its Profit Center Logistics Vehicles & Containers, which offers technical and functional advantages at an attractive price.

The product „folding container“ (Container 1:3 for triple surface) developed by RUAG Land Systems is produced and sold. Containers or vehicle interior designs according to customer specific requirements are also machined and marketed.
