The Defence College of Communications and Information Systems, normally abbreviated to DCCIS, is the centre of excellence for training the UK Armed Forces’ communicators.
It combines the individual Service requirements as well as the central MOD desire to develop more coherent, efficient and cost effective training of communications and information systems across the whole of Defence. DCCIS delivers well trained and motivated personnel to support operational and communications and information requirements for Defence.
Military Communication and Information Training Courses
The College consists of a Headquarters, based at Blandford Camp in Dorset, which directs and coordinates the Military Communication and Information Training Courses for each of the Sea, Land and Air elements of the battlespace environment. Central to the DCCIS vision is the concept to develop training on a joint basis and so within the Headquarters is a Joint training development team which plans future, specialist and individual CIS training designed to meet both current and future needs. This modern, effective, generic and Service specific CIS training, which is recognised both nationally and internationally, is then delivered by the individual DCCIS schools. These are the Royal Navy CIS Training Unit at HMS Collingwood at Fareham in Hampshire, the Royal School of Signals also at Blandford Camp and No 1 Radio School at Cosford near Wolverhampton, of which the Aerial Erector School at RAF Digby is a part.
The CIS Training Unit in HMS Collingwood is responsible for all RN Information Systems training. Typically the IS modules delivered are normally part of longer courses and not managed as separate or stand-alone CIS modules. Some standalone training is carried out but only as preparation for specific systems and equipment training such as RN Command Support System (RNCSS), NavyStar and the Joint Operational Command system (JOCs). It does not normally offer naval CIS training as an individual discipline.
Military Communications and Information Systems Training
The Royal School of Signals is the Army's centre for Military Communications and Information Systems Training for officers and soldiers. The School delivers some 600 courses of 130 different types each year, to around 7,000 individual students, both military and civilian. The courses cover a full range of CIS technical, engineering and management disciplines as well as career training from basic technician to a Masters Degree in CIS Management. It includes training to introduce non-military personnel from industry and Defence related companies such as engineers, designers and project managers, to the MOD. It provides them with a better understanding of the way the military system is organised, how it works, its procedures and its military vocabulary. It creates a better understanding of the manner, scale and intensity in which equipment is used and deployed in operations. The School has modern, world class training facilities, particularly for cable and fibre optics, with computer laboratories, simulators and mobile radio, trunk and satellite systems. These are backed by a full range of administrative and training support facilities including a technical library and both electronic and technical workshops.
Responsibility for the promotion of spare capacity within DCCIS has fallen to Horizon Training, via International Defence Training (IDT(RAF)). If feel you or your company could benefit from the first class training offered please call us to discuss your requirements.
