No 4 School of Technical Training (SoTT) is located at MoD St Athan in South Wales. The school teaches students all aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, supporting them through the practical sessions with the required underpinning knowledge
A recent Estyn* report gave No4 SoTT an outstanding report, the summary stated:
"The No.4 School of Technical Training at St. Athan provides a very high standard of Apprentice support and management. The quality of training in engineering is consistently very good with outstanding features. Apprentices achieve well beyond the normal expectations of the advanced modern apprenticeship framework. They have access to modern facilities and resources and are well supported, if additional help is required, in both on-the-job and off-the-job training. All staff, managers and senior officers of the school closely monitor apprentices' progress and take action to promptly address concerns."

Mechanical tradesmen are taught to maintain a range of vehicles and ground-based equipment, much of which is used in support of aircraft. This can include power-generating equipment for starting aircraft operations, haulage and lifting gear, hydraulic power rigs, air compressors, mobile air-cooling and conditioning units, heavy vehicles etc. The work ranges from routine inspection to fault diagnosis and complete overhauls, and is based wherever needed. Practical elements form a large part of the course ensuring that tradesmen leave confident in their own abilities in welding, milling, grinding, workshop fabrication skills etc.
Electrical tradesmen are taught to maintain the electrical systems on a similar range of equipments as well as provide outdoor power under very demanding conditions. Electrical engineers are also taught the safe installation of temporary electrical installations.
This world-class training is available to purchase by all audiences provided they satisfy certain security checks and any pre-requisites including prior trade knowledge if applicable.
