L-3 WESCAM has been selected by Eurocopter to supply digital electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging sensors to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior in Vienna.

L-3 WESCAM announced today that it has been selected by Eurocopter to supply digital electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging sensors to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior in Vienna. The order includes four MX®-15 True HD (MX-15HD) EO/IR imaging turrets, which will be used by the Austrian National Police, with deliveries scheduled for mid-2008.

Image Analysis

Using their EC135 fleet, the Austrian National Police will be able to detect and analyze critical intelligence and influential details through the sharp colors, bold contrasts and clean images that only WESCAM’s 1080p HD technology delivers.

“This contract further strengthens L-3 WESCAM’s position as a dominant supplier of leading imaging solutions to the airborne law enforcement market,” said Paul Jennison, vice president of government sales for L-3 WESCAM. “Our HD technology offers the market longer-range, higher-resolution images and more detail than the 720p HD technology used in competitive systems.”

Each MX-15HD turret includes long-range electro-optical payloads and a powerful large format 20-micron IR sensor. The units will also contain MX-GEO Gen. 3—the industry’s most effective and accurate ease-of-use control suite. The suite’s combination of GEO-Location, Pointing, Focus, and Tracking technology will support operators in determining accurate subject geographical location and will reduce operator workload by automatically focusing the image and providing assistance in tracking objects.

Continuous 24/7 EO imaging will be made possible in extreme low-light conditions, and even in complete darkness, using WESCAM’s CMCCD MX-Night Spotter and Laser Illuminated Night Spotter Technology. Moving Map and Nightsun interfaces will also be incorporated. L-3 WESCAM is a world leader in the design and manufacture of stabilized, multi-spectral airborne imaging systems.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications employs over 64,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aircraft modernization and maintenance, C3ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) systems and government services. L-3 is also a leading provider of high technology products, subsystems and systems. The company reported 2007 sales of $14 billion.
