Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles (AUGVs) and UAVs Protects Military and Emergency Rescue Personnel

The rising number of foreign missions in various continents presents military planners as well as civil protection and disaster control organisations with major challenges. While fulfilling their peacekeeping tasks, mission teams are at the same time experiencing a deterioration in the security situation. Unmanned systems on land (UGVs) and water (AUVs) or in the air (UAVs) allow teams to operate highly effectively for reconnaissance, while taking action and when keeping a safe distance. And this is even more the case if these systems can be linked to each other. This symbiosis has now been achieved by the two German enterprises Robowatch Technologies and microdrones. “Just combining images, noises and sensor measurement data supplied from the air and from ground-level offers users a much greater basis for situation appraisal,” according to Robowatch Managing Director Ulf Stremmel.

AUGVs can also be remotely controlled if needed. In contrast, microdrones develop micro aerial systems – Vertical Take-Off and Landing Autonomous Unmanned Micro Aerial Vehicles (VTOL-AUMAVs) - that possess unique control and stabilisation functions combined with a high-performance camera.

As well as transmitting critical situation data, the reconnaissance robot, OFRO+detect, will in future provide the mobile base station for the mini helicopter and, among other things, allow unattended recharging of its batteries. Up to now, one battery charge has been sufficient for a flight of around twenty minutes.
