L-3 EO/IR receives a $34 million contract from United States Air Force Research Laboratory.

L-3 EO/IR, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a $34 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for L-3 WESCAMMX-Series (15” and 20” diameter) EO/IR imaging turrets. Deliveries, which will begin immediately, will support Airborne Reconnaissance Low (PM-ARL) and the Persistent Threat Detection Systems (PTDS) IED Defeat and Counter Insurgency missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This award underscore’s WESCAM’s ability to quickly provide fieldable, leading-edge EO/IR technology for the global war on terror,” said John Dehne, president of L-3 WESCAM. “With excellent imagingcapabilities and unprecedented reliability, WESCAM’s MX turrets have quickly become the army’s most successful ISR assets to date and are currently helping to defeat insurgent operations and IED emplacements.”

In 2007, WESCAM announced its involvement with PTDS when Lockheed Martin took delivery of MX-20 EO/IR imaging turrets for use on its tethered aerostat system program. Fully equipped with EO/IR imaging capability, the MX-20 became a key element in stability and support (SASO) operations–providing continuous surveillance, detection and identification capabilities for U.S. forces worldwide.

In 1993, the PM-ARL program utilized WESCAM’s M-24 imaging turrets. Over the years these systems have been replaced, and the program now utilizes WESCAM’s MX-20’s, MX-15’s and MX-15D’s (designators) for ISR missions. L-3 WESCAM is a world leader in the design and manufacture of stabilized, multi-spectral airborne imaging systems.
