AMOS is a smooth bore 120mm advanced mortar system, with double barrel breech loading design.
Due to the turret mounting, AMOS has a full 360-degree field of fire at elevations of between -3 to +85 degrees. Thus, AMOS is capable of both direct fire for self-protection and conventional, indirect fire.
Advanced Mortar System Ammo
The ammo used by AMOS is conventional smooth bore mortar 120 mm fin-stabilised ammo with a short stub case added. Special ammo, e.g. cargo and Strix ammo, can also be used. The stub case is used for breech obturation and to guarantee proper shell positioning, regardless of the barrel elevation.
In a typical mission, advanced mortar system receives its ammo supply, locates itself at the firing position and is given a firing mission either via a command system or based on its own observation equipment. Thereafter, the navigation system and ballistic computer automatically calculate the necessary elevation and traverse angles and charges to be used.
Once the gun has been loaded, AMOS will fire either one shot, a double shot or a salvo of several double shots (MRSI, Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact). The salvo can be fired at various elevations and charges, at precise time intervals in order to obtain simultaneous impact on the target. To enable this rapid firing sequence, the gun is equipped with an autoloader.
Turret Armour and Protection
The turret armour and APC chassis provide protection for crew against infantry weapons fire, artillery shell fragments and NBC weapons. APC chassis mobility enhances vehicle survivability on the modern battlefield.
The AMOS crew normally consists of four men: the driver, commander, gunner and loader. Of these, the commander and gunner are seated in the turret.
Should the need arise, AMOS is also capable of defending itself against immediate threats with direct fire.
Thanks to its electronic equipment, AMOS is capable of fully independent operation, but traditional opto-mechanical aiming methods are retained as back up.
