Smiths Detection selected to supply Japan's first biological agent detection system.

Smiths Detection

Category: Japanese Bio Detection System

This contract meets the initial requirement in a long-term programme by the JDA. Watford-based Smiths Detection will deliver the first bio detection system in 2006, working with the project's prime contractor, THE JAPAN STEEL WORKS, LTD, and the trading house NIHON U.I.C. CO, LTD.

The system consists of a protective shelter capable of operating in hazardous areas and containing the Smiths Detection biological detection suite that can identify an extensive range of biological warfare agents. The detection suite uses a number of complementary technologies that detect the assessed threat and identify specific agents in near real-time, allowing rapid implementation of the necessary treatments and countermeasures. Final assembly of the complete system will take place in Japan.

Robert Judd, President Smiths Detection – Military, said "Smiths Detection is honoured to have been selected by the Japanese government for this important programme. We believe the decision reflects the quality of our technologies. This contract is the result of an intensive two-year programme by our Watford team, working with our partners on the shelter system, and provides us with new opportunities to work on future programmes in the important Japanese market."
