Clearly legible, high quality buttons and a solid construction all contribute to the feeling of a quality reliable product. Indeed, xxxxx Shrike have been sold in over XXX countries.
Shrike Exploder and Accessories
Shrike replaced the older, heavier and more dangerous electromechanical Exploder Dynamo Condensers. More dangerous because under the wrong conditions they could be lethal to the operator. Shrike has overcome this problem by incorporating circuitry that will not permit the exploder to discharge into circuits with a resistance in excess of 400Ω – less than the resistance of the human body.
This however does not reduce its operational ability. Using standard twisted brown and black special purpose firing cable, the Shrike can still initiate a standard UK MoD L2A1 detonator at distances more than 8 kilometres.
Accessories available to the operator include the 8-Way Adaptor which permits the operator to increase the number of outputs from 4 on the standard Shrike to 8 outputs; simply by plugging in the adaptor. Should the operator wish to verify the resistance of the circuit in advance of firing, Chemring EOD Ltd manufactures the STM-86, the Shrike Test Meter.
This device plugs into a firing port and on pressing the TEST button on the Shrike will measure the resistance to the circuit. There is no requirement to remove the STM-86 from the exploder in order to initiate the circuit; the operator simply moves a switch on the STM-86 from TEST to FIRE and the firing pulse is directed through.
There are a number of Shrike variants; MK4, Mk5 and Mk6. The Mk4 or VA version produces a higher output in order to initiate the Group II (Insensitive Munitions) high energy detonators. The MK5 is the Shrike model used by the UK MoD and the MK6 for a specific overseas customer.
Shrike is available with a selection of batteries. It is normally supplied with standard Ni-Cad batteries which will deliver approximately 100 shots before requiring recharging and will hold its charge for approximately 6 months. Also available is the HD (Heavy Duty) Shrike battery which will deliver approximately 200 shots or will support the MK4 VA version of the Shrike. Each of these requires a dedicated battery charger in either 1 or 4 output versions. The final battery option is a Lithium ion battery; this is supplied pre-charged and will deliver approximately 4000 standard or 1000 HD shots. On exhaustion of the battery it is disposed of in accordance with national regulations for Lithium ion batteries.
With the use of Shock Tube or Nonel becoming more popular in EOD environments, Chemring EOD manufactures a Shock Tube Adaptor for the Shrike.
Finally, for out-of–area operations, aid agencies and commando forces there is the Mini-Shrike. This exploder has only one output, but has the same safety protocols as the Shrike, requiring a definite double action to cause initiation. Mini-Shrike is powered by two PP3 9V batteries which deliver approximately 50 shots before requiring replacement of the battery and dispenses with the requirement for power sources and specialist battery chargers to remain in action. There are also accessories available. These are the Shock Tube Adaptor and STM-86 (Mini-Shrike).
