Ricochet Recording and Replay System for the Military

The Ricochet recoding and replay system has been designed for the civil aviation and defence industry to record all information relating to air traffic control (ATC).
The system, however, is not limited to the recording of aviation data. Due to its modular capabilities it is able to reside in one single or an almost unlimited number of servers in different locations, collecting data of numerous types. This includes encrypted network data, such as IEEE802.3, or audio to and from radios in the form of galvanic isolated tapping of an analogue signal on copper wire.
The system also allows information to be controlled and accessed from a different, or several other, locations. Requested recorded data can be played back synchronously, independent of the geographical location of the recorders.
Ricochet describe the concept as an A, B, C process. A, or recording, is essentially a data collector capable of handling different interfaces and correctly transporting the data, providing a cache of information for several months.
B, or Replay, is synchronously retrieving the data from the recorders and providing it for C - Visualisation. Visualisation can be conducted by Ricochet if the recording and replay understands the data format, such as digital/analogue audio, radars, IP cameras etc. Other data, such as encrypted and unknown formats, will be sent to equipment designated for handling it.

Data and Storage
As seen above, the type of data format supported depends on the visualisation capabilities of the Ricochet system. The recording and replay functions are, in themselves, format independent. Øivind Ramde, Ricochet's CTO, describes the system; "like a container ship carrying containers without any need for knowledge about what is inside".
Ricochet visualisation is able to understand audio of various types originating from analogue and digital lines - including VoIP, radar formats including the common ASTERIX and RDIF as well as some lesser used such as CAA, AIRCAT500 and ASR12. Standard CoIP formats and data originating from composite distributed camera video are also supported along with Ricochet's own screen formats.
All other data formats are sent from the system in the same configuration as they was received. For example, Richochet are able to record unknown encrypted data as low-level Ethernet frames from LAN and reinsert the frames on a separate replay LAN during playback, thus allowing the customers equipment to receive the messages as if it were a real-time operation. This can also be used for simulation and training.
Storage of the collected information is completed using RAID based disk systems with built in redundancy and hot standby disks. No switch-over time is encountered due to Ricochet's dual systems which run both parts independently while in parallel. This also helps to provide an extremely high up-time. Backup, disaster recovery sites and automatic & semi-automatic replication are also supported.
Ricochet Recording and Replay Security
The recording portion of the Ricochet system has write access of data but does not support remote access and is therefore known as the 'protected zone'. The replay part is known as the 'open zone' and features read-only access. Remote access is limited to the replay section ensuring only passive action can be taken towards any stored information and making the system a very secure solution.
The administration procedures placed within the system further enhance security and allow complete control of users.
For a user to gain access they must first be defined within the control system and granted the access. Even then it is possible to only allow access to certain information, at a certain time or for a certain time period. It is also possible to control the information that the user is able to see.
Training and Integration
Ricochet offer a full API (application programming interface) for integration of the recording and replay system within the customers command and control applications, though the system can operate separately where interfacing is only conducted through the points of tapped data and replay only through the Ricochet replay client.
The necessary training depends on how the system will be used and, in many cases, simple operator training will be sufficient. Customers actively using the system, through fine tuning, reconfiguration or altering user rights etc. will require more advance technical training which Ricochet are able to provide in their factory or on site.
Regular refresh training is also available though the system is extremely intuitive by design and self explanatory due to the data visualisation.
Ricochet are continuously developing the recording and replay design to provide the best solution possible. One of their most exciting projects currently undertaken is to successful complete 100% lossless recording, at 60 frames per second, of the 56" monitors (3840x2160 pixel resolution) which are becoming ever more popular.
