VISLINK Group company Advent Communications announces the completion of a specialist, fast turnaround military project, involving its 1.5m X-band NewSwift antenna system for twelve mobile satellite terminals for the Spanish Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME), supplied by leading IT and defence system supplier INDRA.

Part of the Spanish army, the highly specialised UME unit was formed in October 2005 to provide the first line of response to any form of national emergency. This initial contract award involved a new design of fast deployment mobile satellite terminal, with INDRA and Advent Communications completing the project in under four months. Key elements of the project's specification included an easy to use system that could be operational in the shortest possible time, removing any need for complex configuration.

The UME contract represents a natural progression from INDRA's existing project for the Spanish Army, developing and installing the SECOMSAT system. This incorporates two hub stations and more than 250 terminals, including fly away, tactical, marine installations and network management software. Further systems for UME are scheduled for delivery during 2007.

Advent was selected by INDRA on the basis of its ability to deliver a top quality customised solution within the extremely tight timescale, matched by competitive pricing and specialist technical support facilities. It represented the first partnership project between the two companies, as Juan Carlos Martín, INDRA's Manager of National Military Ground Stations Programmes, elaborates: “This has been an extremely successful project, and we have received excellent support from the Advent team at every stage.

The UME personnel are very pleased with both how the mobile satellite terminals are operating - reporting that they are easy to use and deploy - and with the speed at which we were able to deliver this first phase of the contract. The mobile satellite terminals represent a key element in the UME's ability to respond to an emergency, acting as the communication's core. We are looking forward to working with Advent Communications in the future, as we complete the next several systems for delivery later this year."

Each of the UME's mobile terminals incorporates a monitoring and control system that can be managed remotely from UME Headquarters through the Torrejón de Ardoz (near to Madrid) Hub station, and utilises Advent's motorised NewSwift antenna system.

This highly compact integrated satellite terminal system features a specially shaped offset fed antenna, which is manufactured in carbon fibre for strength and portability. It is configured for X-band with Voice over IP (VoIP) for baseband data and voice.
